2 - Position description

The Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte, Department Linguistics and Literary Studies, is looking for a teaching assistant

More concretely your work package contains: 

Education domain:

Practice teaching assistant in English linguistics in the Multlingual Bachelor in Linguistics and Literary Studies (MUBA).

Education tasks:

  • You offer teaching assistance in seminars;
  • You coach students;
  • You correct assignments;
  • You help out with exams and Master papers;
  • You offer teaching assistance in courses on English linguistics under the responsibility under the responsibility of the course titulars.

Other tasks: 

  • You support and participate in the screening of potential MUBA candidates (registrations and interviews) by the study programme in consultation with faculty and/or central services/commissions (e.g. study guidance, study path councillors, student administration);
  • You participate in the recruitment policy (student recruitment and social media) within the study programme MUBA (e.g. membership of student recruitment team, management of social media pages, representation of the programme at info days, digital info sessions, etc.), with a focus on the English program;
  • You participate in the internationalisation policy within the study programme, with a focus on the English program. You offer general support in the working of the study programme (particularly the course council and other commissions).

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 


 
3 - Profile

What do we expect from you?

You hold a diploma of Master in Linguistics and Literary Studies or a similar degree, main language English.

  • You have a clear vision on study guidance, recruitment, internationalisation and communications, and good pedagogical practice, as can be seen in relevant experience.
  • You are familiar with the profile ‘English Linguistics’ or similar study programmes.
  • You have a vision on research or you can reflect on your own research experience in relation to the research methodology courses.
  • You have excellent communication skills in English, also within the academic field.
  • You are motivated to participate in (the development of) screening and recruitment activities; prior experience is recommended.
  • You are motivated to offer support regarding the internationalisation policy; prior experience is recommended.
  • Experience with even organisation and/or internal/external communication (especially social media) is recommended.
  • You have experience with software and design tools (e.g. MS Office, Canvas, CMS, Mailchimp).
  • Ambition to build an academic career on the long term (e.g. PhD research, connected to the existingresearch expertise) is recommended.
  • Excellent study results are also recommended.

  • Language regulations:  

A member of the academic staff who is entrusted with a teaching assignment must also be able to demonstrate that the language of instruction is known at ERK level C1 through a qualification certificate or through an adequate diploma. The VUB also provides courses in, for example, academic English.

The administrative language of the VUB is Dutch. In case of insufficient knowledge of Dutch, the VUB will provide an integration course. After a maximum of five years, a member of the academic staff must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the administrative language (ERK level B2).

4 - Offer

Are you going to be our new colleague?

You’ll be offered an appointment, for an assignment of 0.8 FTE, for 1 years (renewable, on condition of the positive evaluation of the activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2024
