Offer Description

We are looking for Postdoctoral Researcher with significant experience in MIMO/SAR architecture and signal processing.

What you will do

“Distributed 140 GHz Automotive Radar to Achieve beyond-LiDAR Performance”

Imec has been pioneering CMOS millimeter wave radar for more than a decade – from being one of the first groups to demonstrate 79 GHz radar in standard digital CMOS, to being the first to demonstrate a system-on-chip for digitally modulated radar, to now being the first to demonstrate high-resolution 140 GHz radar, still in standard CMOS.

One of the key challenges to address, especially for emerging automotive use cases (L4/L5 autonomy), is to further push the angular resolution of the radar system. On the level of a single module, higher angular resolution can be achieved with the concept of MIMO radar using many antennas. However, this approach does not scale well as it still increases the number of physical antennas, hence also the complexity and power consumption of the chip as well as the physical antenna aperture. On the other hand, different applications, especially automotive and robotics, will require multiple radars to obtain a 360° view of the environment. Optimizing the data fusion between radars and combining mono- and multi-static modes will allow to build a high-resolution radar network with a reduced number of antennas per radar node.  Within each radar node, the number of antennas could even be further reduced by using sparse arrays and the compressive sensing framework. And finally, the 3D resolution of the radar network can be even further improved by exploiting the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) concept, originally devised for airborne and satellite borne systems. Although this research targets primarily 140 GHz radars, the concepts and algorithms of the project may also be used and adapted in our 79 GHz research program.

To join our radar team and make this dream of beyond-LiDAR automotive radar a reality, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with significant experience in MIMO/SAR architecture and signal processing.

Your mission will be to develop large, distributed imaging SAR/MIMO radar architectures based on several 140 GHz radar ICs and modules. This radar system will target both low and high mobility scenarios such as automotive and robotics. You will develop suitable concepts and algorithms to achieve 3D imaging with a Lidar-like angular resolution, which is beyond state of the art. You will find solutions to deal with ambiguities especially in the Doppler and angular dimensions. Based on your deep understanding and knowledge of imaging radars, and the broad experience of the imec radar team, you will have the opportunity to bring innovations at all levels, including architecture, signal processing and hardware implementation.
