Offer Description

The Centre for Cosmology, Particle Physics and Phenomenology (CP3) at the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in particle physics. Funding is available to cover both appointments for 3 years. The positions can start at any time during 2024.

If selected, you are expected to join the CMS experimental studies, and to work with Andrea Giammanco and Agni Bethani. Service work (EPR) for the CMS collaboration is also expected, preferentially (but not mandatorily) in the Tracker Detector Performance Group. The Principal Investigators of the CMS-Louvain team are Agni Bethani, Christophe Delaere, and Andrea Giammanco. More information about our CMS activities can be found at https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/irmp/cp3/cms-0.html

Giammanco’s interests include studies of the top quark in pp and heavy ion collisions, investigations of the top-Higgs connection, and searches for new physics in unconventional signatures (including unconventional datasets, such as heavy ions, scouting, parking). Bethani’s research interests include Higgs properties, Higgs pair production and searches for new physics in the Higgs sector. The group also shares an interest in machine-learning applications in experimental particle physics. The exact research activities to be pursued will be defined with the selected candidates and could extend beyond these main topics.

You will be given the opportunity to lead a well-defined analysis effort, with the supervision of one of those PIs and in collaboration with several PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. The analysis work will profit from close contact with the CP3 phenomenology group (Fabio Maltoni, Celine Degrande, Gauthier Durieux, Marco Drewes and their collaborators). It is also possible, although not mandatory, to contribute to our hardware activities, which are mainly devoted to upgrades of the Tracker system and led by Christophe Delaere, or to small non-CMS projects (e.g. Phenomenology, DELPHES developments, Machine Learning R&D, etc.) if they fit with the primary analysis activity.

Applicants should have a PhD in Particle Physics, or expect to have it within the next few months. The funding rules require that the candidates must be in the condition of international mobility, defined by our funding agency as not having resided or carried out their main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the 3 years directly preceding the beginning of this postdoctoral fellowship and that the PhD was obtained not more than 6 years before the start of the contract. Candidates with proven experience in data analysis are particularly encouraged to apply.

The selected candidates are expected to be based in Belgium for the duration of the contract. Travel funding is available for presenting at conferences and workshops and for research missions at CERN or in other collaborating institutes.

Applications should be submitted preferably before April 1st, 2024. Later applications will be considered until both positions are filled.
You should provide a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and a brief description of your research interests, as well as arrange for three recommendation letters to be sent separately. Applications and recommendation letters should be submitted using the online form only:
