Job description

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellowship in the frame of a European research project in collaboration with renowned EU steel manufacturers and leading European research institutes. The subject of the research is on the metallurgical characteristics of Si alloyed electrical steel sheet to be employed as magnetic flux carrier in rotating electromagnetic engines.

Of particular interest in this research project is the formation of the microstructure and crystallographic texture throughout the steel sheet manufacturing process and the correlation of the microstructure and texture of the finished product with the magnetic and mechanical properties of the steel sheet.

The final deliverable of the project is to develop a through-process model that can reliably simulate the texture and microstructure of the finished product.

Job profile
  • The candidate should have a solid basis in the physical metallurgy of low-carbon steel alloys.
  • In addition to this, we expect that the candidate has an excellent, nearly expert knowledge of the basic materials characterisation techniques –sample preparation, optical and scanning microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction (including TKD), X-ray diffraction (qualitative and quantitative phase analysis, texture analysis).
  • It is strongly recommended that the candidate has in-depth knowledge about the basic algorithms of quantitative texture analysis and crystal plasticity methods.
  • The candidate is be able to work in the international environment of Ghent University and to communicate clearly the results with the project partners.
  • The candidate is a flexible and dynamic person, ready to travel inside the country and abroad for execution of project tasks or reporting the results.
  • The candidate possesses excellent academic records underscored by publication records and/or experience in other projects.
  • Fluency in English is required (both spoken and written) as English will be the formal project language.
