Offer Description

Université Libre de Bruxelles - Free University of Brussels - (ULB) is a major academic institution with international recognition for scientific achievements, see https://www.ulb.be/

The group of Dr. Guillaume Schweicher is active in the design, processing, and characterization of transport properties (charge, heat and spin) of conjugated molecular materials, see http://chimpoly.ulb.be/

Within the last decade, organic semiconductors have emerged as new materials showing great promise, thanks to their organic nature (carbon based) providing solubility, properties by design and flexibility. However, despite tremendous progress in molecular design, engineering and processing, only few small molecule organic semiconductors have reached charge carrier mobilities (µ) higher than 10 cm2 /Vs, typically with single-crystal devices. It is only recently that thermal lattice fluctuations, causing temporal variations of transfer integrals (J) and imposing a transient localization of charges leading to reduced macroscopic µ in these weakly bonded van der Waals solids, has been highlighted as the bottleneck for their transport properties.

Our group contributed to the development of new methodologies (combining low frequency vibrational spectroscopy to state-of-the-art quantum mechanical simulations) allowing to identify specific motions detrimental to charge transport. The following project builds on preliminary findings and aims to push further our understanding and control of phonons in to engineer materials with optimized transport properties.

A talented highly motivated young chemist/physicist/engineer with a Ph.D. in the field of organic electronics or related is actively searched. The candidate must have a sound knowledge of crystallography, classic materials science characterization methods, electronic devices fabrication and characterization (OFETs, …). They must be fluent in English, passionate, rigorous, possess strong laboratory skills and be willing to contribute to a healthy work environment. Ability to write high-quality publications/draft patent applications is also required.

The successful applicant is expected to investigate the impact of dynamic disorder on transport properties of conjugated materials and methods to control it. They will get a monthly fellowship of around €2900 (tax free). The position is for an initial duration of one year. Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is hired.

Applications, including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the name and email address of three references can be sent directly to Dr. Guillaume Schweicher ([email protected] ).
