YOUR TASKS

The Department of Economics at Ghent University (Belgium) has a vacant position for post-doctoral researcher in one of its key research areas, i.e. ‘banking & finance’, ‘environmental economics’, ‘international trade, investment and migration’, ‘labour economics and welfare’, and ‘macroeconomics, policy and econometrics’. Candidates from all fields will be considered, the strength of the profile being the main selection criterion.
The Department encourages international candidates to apply. The working language in most department activities and in our master programme in economics is English.

Your tasks:

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research, targeted at publications in highly ranked peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • You fulfill other tasks, depending on your profile and own interests. This may include:
    • contribution to education at the Bachelor's or Master's level, e.g. as a (co-) teacher for a course related to your expertise, or as a supervisor of students in the context of exercises, and their Bachelor's or Master's thesis.
    • support for initiatives to strengthen research in the department, e.g. through the guidance of PhD students, or through the acquisition of external research funding.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate in Economics or in closely related discipline (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma). In the latter case your research has clear added value for (researchers in) economics. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled on August 31 2024 at the latest.
  • You have conducted research within the field of Economics or a closely related discipline relevant for the department (https://www.ugent.be/eb/economics/en/research ).
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher in your doctoral work, as is reflected in relevant scientific publications in (inter)national peer-reviewed academic journals that are widely disseminated.
  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programmes.
  • Recommended are:
    • International mobility, in particular related to research stays at institutions external to the one where you acquired your PhD;
    • Proof of efforts to professionalize education, e.g. by participating at training programmes for didactic skills.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 3 years. A second appointment of up to 3 years can follow, subject to a favourable evaluation of the first term.
  • Your contract will start on 1/09/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1. Click here for more information about our salary scales .
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
