YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in the domain of soil biology

  • Within the research group Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management (SoFer), and in close cooperation with the other research groups in the department, you will further develop your research portfolio in soil biology, showing a high degree of independence and initiative. You will (further) build up specific expertise on molecular techniques (DNA/RNA) in soil biology research within existing or new research collaborations. Your research thereby responds to current challenges in soil management and land use.You (co-)supervise PhD students and contribute to developing research projects both at home and abroad.

  • You spend about 20% of your time on teaching-related tasks. You supervise students in the context of exercises, internships and bachelor/master's thesis.You will teach a course on Soil biology within the Erasmus Mundus programme International Master of Science in Soils and Global Change

  • You devote a limited amount of your time (maximum 10%) to services within and outside the university, such as taking up positions in faculty and university committees, participating in policy-supporting research, .…

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a doctoral degree (in Applied Biological Science, Bioscience engineering, Sciences, or equivalent). The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.

  • For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted

  • You have already conducted research within the field of Soil biology, in particular soil fauna and/or soil microbiology, in relation to soil management and land use

  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher in your doctorate

  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programmes. Experience in teaching at academic level and with student supervision would be an asset

  • You have relevant scientific publications in high ranking international peer-reviewed academic journals that are widely disseminated

  • You have a very good command of English

  • Good knowledge of scientific programming (R, Python, …) would be an asset

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • You will be working within the Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management research group of the department of Environment, with extensive research expertise and research network on soil microfauna and their relationships with the microbial community and plant roots. The research group has a fully equipped laboratory for soil chemical, soil physical and soil biological analyses and set-ups, and also cooperates closely with other UGent groups for molecular analyses.

  • We offer you a temporary appointment of 3 years. A second appointment of up to 3 years can follow, subject to a favourable evaluation of the first term

  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to three years, you can apply

  • The second appointment does not have to be immediately connected to a first term Your appointment will start on 1 April 2024 at the earliest
