The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-law ) is the leading Finnish institute of legal education. Some degrees granted by the Faculty are completed at the bilingual Vaasa Unit of Legal Studies. The Faculty’s mission is to train qualified, ethically responsible legal professionals for both the Finnish and international markets through high-quality international research and research-based teaching. The Faculty of Law offers undergraduate degrees in Finnish, Swedish and English as well as a bilingual degree in Finnish and Swedish. The Faculty has a teaching and research staff of around 120 people and 2,400 students pursuing a degree.

The appointee will be affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science, at the Faculty of Law, and form part of Dr. Tiina Paloniitty’s BusinessFinland-funded project CEIWA-UH. The project collaborates with the Legal Tech Lab and China Law Center, both at the Faculty of Law.
The Faculty of Law invites applications for

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in environmental law

for a fixed term of 1.10.2021–31.7.2023

The appointee’s duties will include conducting research and providing teaching in areas connected to the research project´s themes or appointee’s areas of expertise as well as other activities at the Faculty.

The appointee will be a team member in the research project Circular Economy of Water in Industry (CEIWA-UH, BusinessFinland decision number 599/31/2021). The appointee will work with, and under the supervision of, Dr. Tiina Paloniitty. The main working language will be English though knowledge of Finnish is mandatory. Knowledge of German will be an asset.

CEIWA-UH investigates the technology and law interface of the industrial water pollution regulation in an interdisciplinary research consortium consisting of both public research institutions and private companies (such as UPM, Kemira, Andriz etc.) and is looking for post-doctoral researcher with knowledge of EU and Finnish environmental law and desire to pursue interdisciplinary research on the science and law interface. The research is expected to lead to outputs in the form of journal articles and book chapters.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research on EU and Finnish environmental law and water governance. Successful appointees will have strong knowledge of environmental law and an affinity with both doctrinal and critical approaches, whereas in-depth knowledge of EU water governance, EU chemicals regulation and role of science and technology in environmental governance will be assets. The appointees shall have completed an applicable doctoral degree (preferably in law, but social sciences is not excluded) before the start of employment. The position requires the ability and motivation to conduct independent scientific research, and excellent oral and written proficiency in English.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system applied in Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary range will be €3,400–3,700 per month, depending on the merits and experience of the appointee. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
