Job description

The position is for a person wishing to become involved in doctoral research and divide their time between teaching assistantship and their research.

They will be required to assist teachers in supervising practical exercises, debate sessions and marking papers and exams at bachelor's and master's level in journalism, in particular.

They will also be developing doctoral research in the field of journalism studies and, more generally, on the professional, cultural, social and economic issues of media systems (past and present), as part of the activities of the Laboratory of Journalistic Practices and Identities (LaPIJ) at the Centre for Research in Information and Communication (ReSIC).

A full-time assistant's post (for a maximum of 6 years) is awarded for an initial period of 2 years, which may be renewed for a further 2-year period after consultation with the relevant bodies. As the aim of the assistant's mandate is to carry out and finalise a doctoral thesis, the tasks will be equitably divided between teaching and research. These tasks may be reviewed at regular intervals.

Required title

Hold a Master's degree (120 credits) from a Belgian university or equivalent from another country in Journalism, Information and/or Communication Sciences or, more broadly, in the social sciences, and meet the conditions for access to a doctorate.

Skills required

The candidate will demonstrate professional skills in the field of journalism (ideally with experience in long-term journalistic productions - documentary, investigative, etc.), and a penchant for academic work.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate research skills and, ideally, teaching experience in order to help students carry out journalistic projects and gain a detailed understanding of the skills required for the job.

Fluency in French and English is required.

Courses to be supervised

Four or five courses may form part of the candidate's teaching workload. These courses will be chosen from among those relating to journalism training:

Master's: journalistic practices, editorial analysis and conceptualisation, editorial production, narrative journalism and investigative journalism, contemporary trends in journalism, history of journalism, journalism internships.

Bachelor's degree: critical analysis of the media, media sociology and economics, media ethics.

Administrative duties: participation in student fairs and activities linked to the Department of Information and Communication Sciences.
