Offer Description

CONTEXT

The European Green Deal (EGD) aims to transform the European Union to become carbon neutral by 2050. A key pillar of this transition is that it should leave no person or place behind. The European Commission has created a special tool, called the Just Transition Mechanism, to support this ambition. The researcher will work closely on this subject through participation in the European project ‘BOLSTER ’ (Bridging Organizations and marginalized communities for Local Sustainability Transitions in EuRope).

BOLSTER aims to understand how marginalized communities are affected by the EGD policies and the Just Transition Mechanism. It then aims to assess whether involving such communities in decision-making processes increases the support for transition plans. BOLSTER studies seven different regions in Europe, and the researcher will focus on the Belgian case (specifically the province of Hainaut).

JOB DESCRIPTION

The researcher will have two key missions:

  • The researcher will closely work with the BOLSTER consortium (12 different organizations throughout Europe) to ensure the ‘Research in Action’ tasks associated to the project. This includes organizing multi-actor forums in the target regions in Belgium.
  • The researcher will work in collaboration with Professor Nathalie Crutzen (Professor of Sustainability, Strategy, and Performance Management) and with Professor Sybille Mertens (Professor of Social Economy, Social enterprises business models, Collective action for transition) on a research project to complement the work with BOLSTER. The project should be linked to the theme of the just transition or a related topic (governance of transitions, collaboration between stakeholders for transitions, linking social economy business models and just transition, financing just transition, etc.) based on their background.
  • The researcher will develop a clear research agenda for the duration of the research period (including precise research questions, expected scientific contributions and theoretical underpinnings of the research). A clear publication agenda will be validated (including A*, A, min B journals[1] ) at the beginning of the mission.
