Job description

A full-time, indivisible post in the field of “Philosophy and Architecture” within the Architecture Department. This post includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the Community.

Teaching activities

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching at Bachelor's and Master's level.

The position will include teaching the following courses:

  • Philosophy and the aesthetics of architecture (40h Th), Bachelor’s level. This course, taught to a large group of students, will consider the history of philosophical thought in relation to architectural issues, including elements of the philosophy of art and aesthetics. The aim is to help students develop a critical mindset and provide them with the tools they need to position themselves in relation to the major issues facing society today.

  • Introduction to research in architecture, basic principles (40 hours, seminar), Master’s level. This group seminar contributes to the development of final year projects. 

  • Introduction to research in architecture, advanced principles (40 hours, seminar), Master’s level. This group seminar contributes to the development of final year projects. 

In addition, the successful candidate will be required to 

  • develop a new course of their choice, at Master’s level, on the basis of their expertise;

  • occasionally take part in theory or practical classes (workshops), in partnership with permanent teaching staff;

  • promote final projects and doctoral theses;

  • take part in seminars for doctoral students.

Research Activities

The candidate will lead and develop international research in the relevant field. The development of collaborations within the Faculty and/or the University is encouraged.

Services to the community

  • The job-holder will be expected to take part in services to the community, particularly within the Faculty of Architecture and the University. 

Qualifications required / profile

  • Hold a research PhD in architecture, philosophy or any other field related to the teaching and research activities described in the vacancy notice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the issues raised by the relationship between philosophy and architecture (research work, publications, etc.).

  • Demonstrate an openness to interdisciplinary approaches towards architectural culture and an ability to work as a team in teaching and research.

  • Be able to teach in French to a large group (Bachelor's programme).

Selection procedure

  • There are several stages to the application process. A selection committee will short-list applicants to be invited to interview. Short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview which will include a mock teaching situation.

  • including the planned integration within the University of Liège (5 pages max);
    • A teaching dossier including a report on any prior teaching activities and a teaching plan
  • (5 pages maximum). The teaching plan should include an outline of the “Philosophy and aesthetics of architecture” course, as well as the assessment methods envisaged;
  • A complete list of the applicant’s publications and a copy of the five publications they consider to be most significant in relation to the relevant field.
  • In addition, in three pages, the candidate will also have to:
    • a) highlight their five main publications;
    • b) explain their contribution to the advancement of knowledge in their field of research;
    • c) explain their suitability for the post being applied for.

    Recruitment conditions

    The post-holder will be appointed either for a fixed term of four years, or definitively.

    If the post is granted for a fixed term, an evaluation will take place during the third year.

    • If this evaluation is negative, the appointment will end after the four-year period.

    • If the assessment is positive, the person concerned shall be appointed on a permanent basis.
