Job description

A full-time, indivisible post in the field of Environmental history applied to architecture and urban planning within the Department of Architecture. This post includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the Community.

Teaching activities

  • The post holder will be expected to develop teaching on environmental history in relation to the fields of architecture, urban planning and landscape. By looking at the interactions between the natural environment and society, the aim is to explain the reconfiguration of our relationship with nature and the multiple impacts of human activity on the ecological balances that result from it.

  • These classes will help students develop their critical thinking skills, grasp the complexity and fragility of inhabited environments, and think differently about the natural cycles of material, water, soil and biodiversity. At a time when the scale of environmental problems such as climate change and the increasing scarcity of natural resources suggests a transformation of the ways in which the built environment is designed and produced on all scales, the ultimate aim - in conjunction with other courses - will be to enable students to rethink relationships between the environment and human societies as part of their design activities for inhabited spaces and their theoretical reflections.

  • The missions of the successful applicant may include:

    • Coordinating and taking charge of part of the content of the Territory 1 - Environment, contemporary issues course (ARCH1012-1, block 1 Bachelor’s programme);

    • Collaboration on the Research Methodology in Architecture course (ARCH0562-1, block 1 Master's programme);

    • Collaboration during the Progress sessions (ARCH0563-1, block 1 Master's programme);

    • Involvement in the practical courses run in the architecture project workshops, for example, the Regional project - open space workshop (ARCH3330-1, block 3 Bachelor's programme) and the project workshops in the Master's programme ;

    • The development of an optional course dedicated to the complexity and diversity of the relationship between living, technology and nature (alone or in collaboration);

    • Supervision of final projects.

    Research Activities

  • The post holder will be expected to develop research in the field of environmental history in relation to the fields of architecture, urban planning and landscape. Their work will develop critical perspectives offering ways of investigating current socio-ecological issues and thinking about the future.

  • They will lead and develop international research in the relevant field, as well as collaborations within the Faculty of Architecture and the University.

  • Services to the community

    • The job-holder will be expected to take part in services to the community, particularly within the Faculty of Architecture and the University.

    Qualifications required / profile

    • Hold the title of doctoral thesis, having carried out work related to the teaching and research activities described above;

    • Demonstrate an openness to interdisciplinary and cross-cutting approaches;

    • Demonstrate an ability to work as a team in teaching and research.

    Selection procedure

  • There are several stages to the application process. A selection committee will short-list applicants to be invited to interview. Short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview which will include a mock teaching situation.

  • Our institutional policy is based on diversity and equality of opportunity. We select candidates on the basis of their qualities regardless of age, sexual orientation, origin, beliefs, disability or nationality.

  • Applications

    Applications should be made using the online form available on the following website: https://my.uliege.be/portail/go_xt.do?a=o%7C11004%7Ce%7C571117 no later than 03/03/2024 (before midnight Belgian time). Late applications may be refused.

    Documents required:

    • A cover letter;

    • A curriculum vitae (for the list of items that must appear in the curriculum vitae, see the standard template available for download HERE ) ;

    • A complete list of the applicant’s publications and a digital copy of the five publications they consider to be most significant in relation to the area in question, and a compilation of the abstracts of these publications;

    • A copy of diplomas and certificates.

    The post-holder will be appointed either for a fixed term of four years, or definitively.

    If the post is granted for a fixed term, an evaluation will take place during the third year.
