JOB DESCRIPTION

A full-time indivisible position, in the field of Animal genetics within the Department of Veterinary Management of Resource Animals. This position includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the community.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

  • Head lecturer on the “Animal Genomics” (VETE1068) course aimed at students in the Bachelor’s in Veterinary Medicine
  • Head lecturer on the “Supplementary Genomics” (GENE431-1) aimed at students in the Master’s in Biomedical Sciences, Department of Biomedical and Preclinical Sciences
  • Participation in teaching post-graduate courses in the field
  • The person in charge of this field is required to maintain a strong connection between the field, research activities and their teaching.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will be required to

  • Develop excellent research activities in genetics; this activity will represent at least 50% of the work load, developing a research team and supervising doctoral theses;
  • They will maintain and develop capacities to propose and manage research and to issue international-level scientific publications on the subject.
  • The development of collaborative working within the Department and the Faculty but also on the national and international level is expected.

SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

The successful applicant is required to participate in Faculty and University services to the community. These services are based integration into various Faculty and University bodies.

The applicant must be involved in the professional sector on the regional, national and international level and be able to call upon recognised expertise in the field of animal genetics (e.g. advice, diagnosis, genetic evaluation, continuous training of practitioners).

They will also be required to actively participate towards the reputation of ULiège, both nationally and internationally.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED / PROFILE

  • Hold a Doctorate (PhD) in the discipline, being a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine would be a selective advantage;
  • Have spent at least six months outside the Wallonia-Brussels community in a professional capacity, not necessarily continuously, is an advantage;
  • Be committed to achieving B2 level in French by the end of the probationary period. The knowledge of other languages is a plus;
  • Have carried out research in the field of animal genetics, supported by international scientific publications; criteria: bibliometric indexes (weighted according to scientific seniority and speciality), established networks/partnerships, prior involvement in research projects and teams, capacity to develop/defend a vision in terms of scientific research for the next five years;
  • Demonstrate an interest and real aptitude for teaching (teaching plan);
  • Have good organisational and administrative skills to ensure the smooth running of the department;
  • Have good interpersonal skills (know how to work in a team, know how to build connections and create networks, know how to create a supportive environment);
  • Have shown a sense of collective interest.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Each application will be examined by a Faculty committee which will shortlist applicants for interview, explaining their decisions with regard to the job description and the qualifications and merits of the applicants. The committee will then carry out the interviews. The interview will cover the applicant’s CV, their teaching and research plans and how they intend to integrate into the University. The selection process will include a public lecture.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is awarded either for a fixed term of four years, or immediately on a permanent basis.

If a fixed term contract is awarded, an evaluation will be carried out at the end of the third year.

  • If the evaluation is negative, the person’s appointment will end after the fourth year.
  • If the evaluation is positive, the person will be appointed permanently.
