Offer Description
The Jan Michiels lab is embedded within the KU Leuven (University of Leuven) Centre of Microbial and Plant genetics and within the VIB (Flemish Institute for Biotechnology) Center for Microbiology. The group studies bacterial survival under various stressful conditions. The lab consists of 20 junior lab researchers and is looking for a dynamic and highly motivated postdoc. Candidates with the required profile (see below) will work with us to submit a full application for fellowships to Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A FUNDED POSITION BUT AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO APPLY FOR FUNDING. The main research themes of the group are multidrug tolerance and evolutionary dynamics of bacterial adaptation to complex phenotypes. A second major line of research is directed towards the discovery of novel antibiotics and the development of microbial cell factories using metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. The broader potential research themes are: MUTATIONAL ROBUSTNESS AND EVOLVABILITY • Pathways involved in robustness against de novo mutations • Type of genetic variation that can be buffered • Molecular mechanisms underlying mutational robustness EVOLUTION AND MECHANISMS OF ANTIBIOTIC RESILIENCE • Persistence • Resistance MICROBIAL CELL FACTORIES • Alcoholic and diol chemicals • Fatty acids

Responsibilities
The candidate will be requested to compose a project related to any of the research themes listed above and apply for MSCA and FWO Fellowships which offer individuals the opportunity to enhance their career development and prospects by spending a period (2-3 years depending on the call) working in a new host lab.

Profile
Only experienced researchers can apply, this means that the applicant:
- Holds a PhD in bioscience engineering, (bio)chemistry, (molecular) biology or biotechnology chemical engineering, or other relevant fields
- Has an excellent publication track record
- Is capable of writing an excellent project proposal under our supervision before the stipulated deadlines
- Has hands-on experience and is capable of working independently in a molecular microbiology lab
