VIB scientists study the molecular mechanisms that regulate the functions of the human body, plants and microorganisms. Such mechanistic research leads to innovative insights into the normal and abnormal/pathological life processes, with the potential to use these insights to develop novel therapeutics, diagnostics, agricultural applications and technologies.

With a strong focus on technology-intensive research, VIB Technologies encompasses 12 core facilities, a dedicated Tech Watch team, and a Technology Training unit. Spanning across Leuven, Ghent, Brussels, and Antwerp, our facilities house a dedicated team of over 100 staff members.

Currently, we are actively seeking a motivated colleague to join our team. This role will involve providing expertise and support in the area of microscopy-based research of VIB labs of the Center for Structural Biology and Brussels-based labs of the Center for Inflammation Research. The successful candidate will be embedded in a team, located in Ghent and Leuven, but will be expected to provide support to research groups in an independent manner, on a daily basis, on our location in Etterbeek.

• Master or Ph.D. in Biomedical or Biological Sciences or equivalent through experience
• Mindset for supporting and enabling science of other research labs through offering of expertise  
• Technology minded
• Experience in confocal microscopy applications is required
• Experience in image processing and analysis is required
• Team player with strong social, communication and didactic skills
• Well-organized, structured and able to autonomously plan and execute tasks
• Meticulous and self-motivated
• Accurate in compiling, documenting and reporting his/her work
• Eager to learn and adapt in a fast-evolving environment 
• Good English skills, both oral and written 
• The following can be an asset:
  • Experience in working in a microscopy core facility
  • Experience in follow-up of life science research projects

• Support multiple research groups for basic and advanced light microscopy applications and for image analysis
• Discuss experimental setup, acquisition preferences and analysis plan with users and with colleagues
• Provide training for fluorescence and confocal imaging applications
• Follow-up evolution of newly trained users
• Provide immediate support for various microscopy setups
• You will be based at Campus Etterbeek, with occasional visits to the VIB sites in Leuven (Gasthuisberg) and Ghent (Technologiepark-Zwijnaarde), and participation in (hybrid) project meetings with colleagues on the Ghent/Leuven locations
