Location: Campus Leuven

LUCA School of Arts is a multidisciplinary educational and research environment where creative talent can develop artistically, performatively and technically. In four cities (Brussels, Genk, Ghent and Leuven), LUCA bundles the educational expertise of five renowned institutes (Sint-Lukas, Narafi, C-mine, Sint-Lucas and Lemmens). The research within LUCA covers the full spectrum from demand-driven practice-oriented research to autonomous artistic research. The research is being developed in close collaboration with and embedded in the Associated Faculty of Arts of KU Leuven. With more than 800 staff and 4,000 students, LUCA is a creative hub for more than 4,800 artists, theater and filmmakers, designers, musicians, photographers, teachers, researchers…

Assignment

The Music & Drama research unit of LUCA School of Arts, Lemmens campus, offers a three-year part-time (70%) postdoctoral position, for candidates interested in artistic-educational research, embedded in the music education research cluster.

As a doctoral assistant, you carry out 50% of the postdoctoral research project. Your project relates to at least one, preferably several, of the research lines of the music education research cluster :

  • Understanding the professional development of music educators, their role in educational innovation, and their potential as change agents in practitioner research.
  • Studying the relevance and impact of music learning in the community, including music in schools, leisure and community music.
  • Advancing improvisational practices in music education, ranging from musical improvisation activities to pedagogical improvisation.
  • Making music education practices more (self-)critical and (self-)reflective through the involvement of music education philosophy.

In addition to setting up and carrying out your own research project, you contribute to the development of an inspiring and active research culture within the Music & Drama research unit. On the one hand, by coordinating research seminars and workshops for the researchers of the music education research cluster, and on the other hand, by participating and contributing to general cluster-wide research seminars and meetings of the research unit. Presence on campus is very important.

An important part of your assignment is the connection between your research project and education. As a doctoral assistant, you are 20% active as a teacher and thesis supervisor within the music education training programs.

Responsibilities

• Developing an artistic-educational research project.

• Take initiative to acquire external research funding.

• Coordinate research seminars within the music education research cluster.

• Actively participate in general research meetings of the Music & Drama research unit.

• Connecting your work as a teacher and researcher, in the context of research-based and -oriented education.

• Supporting teachers with research, teaching or guidance assignments.
