The Institute of Development Policy (IOB ) of the University of Antwerp wants to contribute to a more just and sustainable world through multidisciplinary academic research, education, partnerships and political engagement.

IOB has the following full-time (100%) vacancy: 

Assistant professor, Associate professor, Professor or Full professor in the area of ‘State formation and resilient societies’ 

Position

The vacancy is for a full time Senior Academic Staff member. As a member of the Senior Academic Staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP), you will contribute to IOB’s three core tasks of education (30%), research (40%) and services (30%). Your role also includes organisational and managerial aspects. 

Education

  • You will provide high-quality education, among others in the course modules of “Governance and development” and “From violent conflict to peace and state reconstruction” in the interdisciplinary Master programmes at IOB.

Research

You will

  • expand high-quality scientific research and outreach of the Institute in the area of development processes, actors and policies. You strengthen the research line “State formation and resilient societies”, focusing on the processes and dynamics of state formation and the ability of societies to resist, adapt to or recover from (the consequences of) a lack of state presence and/or performance.
  • acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • publish in academic journals related to your field.
  • supervise PhD students.

Services

You will

  • strengthen the network of contacts of the Institute with development actors at the international level and in the Global South.
  • play a role in the provision of both academic services and outreach of your academic research, within the university and externally.
  • build in systematic attention to outreach activities in order to enhance the societal impact of your academic work in connection with the field of governance and development. 

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Development Studies or adjacent disciplines (political science, sociology/anthropology, geography, …).
  • You obtained your initial higher education degree in a Low or Middle Income Country.
  • Your work engages with different disciplines and with a mixture of methodological approaches.
  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
