Staff Scientists at ISTA pursue research projects with professors, serving as collaborators with expertise normally not present within research groups. We are searching for a Staff Scientist expert in slice electrophysiology, versed in chemo- and optogenetic tools, skilled in quantitative analysis and proven track record in developing novel experimental procedures. The Staff Scientist should thrive with diverse experimental challenges. The position will be associated with ISTA’s preclinical facility , which provides technical support for research groups on campus.

New developments in manipulating neuronal activity and exploring the underlying molecular and structural properties have recently added an exquisite pallet of tools to explore the brain. These cover fields as far apart as single-cell transcriptomics and ultrastructural analysis. In combination with electrophysiology, such novel approaches promise to uncover fundamental properties of neurodevelopment, biophysics and circuit computations. Specific combinations of these approaches are required across labs at ISTA (e.g., Joesch , Shigemoto , Novarino , Hippenmeyer , Jonas , Siegert , Danzl ). The staff scientist in electrophysiology should collect technical expertise, develop and perform novel experiments with the different research groups and co-supervise students, facilitating interactions and promoting science across labs.

Your Profile

  • PhD in Neuroscience
  • Expertise and knowledge in whole-cell patch clamp recording from acute brain slices, optogenetic technologies
  • Quantitative analysis skills
  • Experience in working on multidisciplinary projects is a plus
  • Proven technical proficiency at the highest level
  • Excellent command of English (working language)
  • Strong team player with proven collaborative spirit and outstanding communication skills
  • High multitasking skills
