Assistant Professorship (m_f) - Tenure Track

TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.

The Institute of Materials Chemistry, Research Unit Molecular Materials Chemistry of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry is offering the following tenure track position for 40 hours/week. Expected start: December 2022.

The position is initially limited to a period of six years, but the candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract.

The tenure-track position is affiliated with the Institute of Materials Chemistry, Research Unit of Molecular Materials Chemistry, and includes research and teaching duties in the fields of materials chemistry and materials for energy conversion. The focus of research should be on the area of solar fuels, in particular at the cross-section between heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysis, with emphasis on the design of catalysts, their structural and catalytic characterisation, with special emphasis on the combination of molecular and solid-state systems.

Tasks:

Research:

  • Basic and applied research in the field of photocatalysis, with special emphasis on bridging homogenous and heterogenous photocatalysis to advance solar fuel generation
  • Synthesis of advanced multifunctional molecular materials (e.g. molecular inorganic clusters, micro- and mesoporous hybrid structures) and their comprehensive characterisation using a wide array of spectroscopic, microscopic and diffraction techniques
  • Investigation of optoelectronic properties, kinetics and reaction mechanisms as well as dynamic processes at interfaces (e.g. charge transfer, charge separation, diffusion processes)
  • Further development of photocatalytic reactors (e.g. microfluidic reactors)
  • Management and support of the photocatalytic and spectrochemical infrastructure
  • Dissemination of research results; organisation of scientific meetings/symposia as well as outreach activities

Teaching:

  • The tenure track position is expected to cover the areas of inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, and energy conversion in teaching through both lectures and laboratory exercises. The candidate is expected to independently organise and teach courses within the Bachelor’s program in” Technical Chemistry” as well as within the Master’s programs relevant to the discipline (e.g. “Technical Chemistry”, “Chemistry and Technology of Materials” and especially “Green Chemistry”). It should be noted that at TU Vienna, Bachelor teaching is currently done in German and appropriate language skills are required.

Your profile:
  •  A complete domestic or equivalent foreign university education with a doctorate in Chemistry or Technical Chemistry.
  • Excellent German and English language skills
  • Experience as a postdoctoral researcher and proven expertise in the fields of homogenous and heterogenous photocatalysis, with special emphasis on solar fuel generation, both in basic and applied research. Expertise in the design and development of detectors and photocatalytic reactors, including liquid and gas phase systems
  • Proven expertise in the field of nano chemistry with particular emphasis on modern developments in molecular inorganic materials chemistry (e.g. functional inorganic clusters, micro- and mesoporous hybrid materials). Extensive knowledge in synthesis and characterisation, especially optoelectronic properties and dynamic charge transfer processes
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, and international reputation (lecture and presentation record, national and international research collaborations). Scientific publication activity in the international literature on the required research topics (see above, leading authorship of at least 10 original papers)
  • Experience in the conception, implementation and management of research projects (proof of acquisition of competitively awarded third-party funds)
  • Relevant teaching experience in academic teaching in lectures and laboratory exercises, organisation and management of courses (e.g. laboratory exercises), proven experience in (co-) supervision of academic theses
  • Experience in the junior staff development with respect to the Career Advancement Plan for Women at TU Wien
  • Willingness to lead a research group as well as to take on leadership roles within the organisational structure; organisational aptitude and ability to work in a team as well as excellent communication skills

We offer:
  • Continuing personal and professional education and flexible working hours
  • Central location of workplace with very good accessibility (U1/U4 Karlsplatz)
  • A creative environment in one of the most liveable cities in the world
  • Additional benefits for employees can be found at the following link: Fringe-Benefit Catalogue of TU Wien

The employment starts as University Assistant with a minimum salary of EUR 4,061.50 gross (14 x per year) according to the collective bargaining agreement for a PostDoc. After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 4,782.30 gross (14 x per year).

We look forward to receiving your application until 01.09.2022.

Please submit your application including :

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter
  • List of scientific achievements
  • List of experience and activities in academic teaching and supervision of young scientists
  • Concept for future plans in research and teaching and contributions to the scientific profile of the faculty
  • Certificates of doctoral and diploma degrees (copies) (upload it under the category: +add more documents )
  • Proof of the acquisition of third-party funds (upload it under the category: +add more documents )
