Curtin University is a highly ranked Australian public research and teaching university.  The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy undertakes research into astrophysics, astronomy engineering, and high-performance computing related to astronomy. 

Job Description 

The successful intern will develop a public-facing website that will support the registration of users (members of the general public) and user ability to upload images from their smartphones.  The images will be of the night sky, capturing streaks due to the passage of satellites in orbit across the camera field of view.  The website backend will run a python script (largely already developed) that processes the images, identifies the satellites, and returns a set of web pages with information on the images and the satellites. 

Users should be able to see the processing results of their images, the results of other users, and aggregate results, plots, and statistics from the ensemble of images uploaded by all users (such as geographical statistics, user statistics, satellite statistics etc).

The website will be developed and deployed on Curtin’s new enterprise Digital Platform, implemented on Amazon Web Services (AWS).  The intern will work with an AWS Principal Solution Architect to design and deploy the website.

Required skills: 

  • Demonstrated ability in one or more programming languages, including Python as one of them.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

This Internship amounts to $6,800 for an Undergraduate working at 2-days a week for 6 months.
