An exciting opportunity exists for a team oriented equine and large animal nurse to join the team at the University of Adelaide’s state-of-the-art Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Roseworthy.

We are seeking a suitably qualified or experienced veterinary nurse to provide high quality care for all equine, large animal and hobby farm patients (goats, sheep, alpacas etc). Duties include working in the hospital setting with internal medicine specialists, monitoring and treatment of hospitalised patients including emergency triage and critical care, working with surgeons on elective and emergency procedures and providing support and assistance to primary opinion clinicians for both emergency and non-emergency consultations.

Working as part of the clinical team you will be required to work through a 24/7 roster, which includes nights, weekends, and public holidays.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is part of the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences clinical teaching facility which operates on a commercial basis, offering a range of first opinion and specialist veterinary services to the general public and referring veterinarians. The VTH also provides a clinical training environment for veterinary and veterinary technology students working under the close supervision of experienced veterinarians, nurses and support staff. The VTH is situated on the University’s picturesque Roseworthy Campus, approximately 9km from the township of Gawler and on the doorstep of the world-renowned Barossa Valley wine region.

This position suits an enthusiastic, team-oriented veterinary nurse / veterinary technologist with a passion for delivering the highest standards of service and care. You will need to have proven experience as an equine or large animal veterinary nurse in a clinical setting, with experience in emergency triage, medical and surgical nursing.  You need to be able to work in high pressure situations, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be motivated to mentor the next generation of vets and nurses by imparting knowledge and modelling the highest standards of professional behaviour.

Candidates who are working towards their certificate IV in Veterinary nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, and have some large animal handling experience are encouraged to apply.

To be successful you will need:

  • Demonstrated experience and high level expertise in general horse handling.
  • Demonstrated experience or willingness to work and train with other large animal species (eg. alpacas, sheep, goats, cows, pigs)
  • Demonstrated experience working in a clinical setting.
  • Attention to detail in record keeping and documentation.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently but participate cooperatively in team activities.

The successful candidate should have completed a relevant certificate or a combination of relevant experience and/or education/training and have demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety.

As part of the recruitment process you will be required to undertake a medical assessment
