PRIMARY DETAIL

Salary Package: From $136,636 - $160,791 (HEW Level 10, Band 1), plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
Appointment Type: Full-time, continuing
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, Dharug land, North Ryde

THE ROLE

In this role, you will ensure that animals used in research at Macquarie are treated humanely and in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of conduct.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provision of expert advice to applicants (researchers, HDR candidates and honours students), Committee and University regarding policy,guidelines, legislation and welfare relating to research and teaching involving animals.

  • Preparation of written reports to the Animal Ethics Committee on the welfare of animals used in research and teaching.

  • Provision of professional advice to the Committee on the acceptability of procedures and techniques used in research and teaching activities.

  • Assisting the Secretary to the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) by providing data for correspondence, reports, briefings and other documents on behalf of the Committee and the University.

  • Assessment of animal ethics applications to identify compliance (under the provisions of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes and the NSW Animal Research Act) and levels of risk to the University.

  • Liaison with external experts and regulatory bodies as required ensuring the welfare of all animals and compliance of the University with relevant statutory requirements.

  • Development and delivery of education and training programs for all animal users regarding animal research ethics and welfare - including oversight of competence of newly trained users and document and report these interactions to the AEC.

  • Provision of expert advice and recommendations to relevant University bodies regarding development of animal facilities and policies that may impact upon animal welfare.

  • Liaison with any veterinary experts as appropriate; and coordinating the veterinary requirements of animal users as required.

  • Liaison with Animal Facility Managers on issues affecting animal welfare.

Selection Criteria

  • Veterinary qualifications and experience

  • Understanding of the interpretation and application of the NSW Animal Research Act,

  • and the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.

  • Understanding of a university research environment

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and internet.

Key Experiences

  • Experience overseeing the welfare of a range of animal species

  • Experience in liaising with researchers and providing expert advice on matters relating to animal welfare and procedures.

  • Working in university research management environment.

  • Developing and delivering seminars to researchers.

  • Influencing senior stakeholders.
