About the opportunity 


 


The Senior Technical Officer manages and supervises a team in the delivery of effective technical services within the designated area of responsibility, to achieve enhanced education/research support outcomes. This includes ensuring that day-to-day technical support services, purchasing and supplies are coordinated and delivered to support practical classes, demonstrations, or research as required, managing the provision of technical advice to educators/researchers, ensuring that the facility and equipment are properly maintained, and that appropriate documentation and records are in place.  


 


The Senior Technical Officer will lead a team to implement new processes, procedures, systems, and ways of working to improve customer service delivery, efficiency, and resource utilisation. and training to support the day to day running of research laboratories. The role also ensures that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the work area are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy and relevant legislation. 


 


The Senior Technical Officer oversees the professional development of a team of technical staff, ensuring that relevant technical and professional training is undertaken, mentoring, and coaching the team to develop skills that positively affect how they work and interact with others. They will also work with the team to continually improve on the delivery of agreed upon service and deliver on strategic objectives at the local level. 


 


Your key responsibilities will be to: 


  • manage the timely delivery of agreed technical services in the designated area of responsibility, in line with the research, learning and teaching requirements of the work area 

  • lead the implementation of service improvements, service excellence and operational efficiencies within the responsibility area 

  • resolve complex customer issues by providing appropriate solutions and alternatives in a timely manner, follow up to ensure resolution and escalating to your manager as required. Support and guide direct reports in issue resolution 

  • plan and manage the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, in alignment with the TSS overall strategy and objectives 

  • proactively lead technical staff and users of all levels in best practices and awareness of University policies and relevant WHS/compliance legislation, standards, codes, policies, guidelines, and local provisions 

  • identify and mitigate risk, including emergency response in the responsibility area in collaboration with your Manager 

  • lead a high performing, adaptable team, with efficient management of workload levels to support effective delivery of work activity 

  • provide financial management support for the designated area of responsibility. 


 


About you: 


  • a degree in relevant physics discipline or equivalent extensive experience and a relevant Laser Officer qualification (or willing to complete the required courses) 

  • significant and relevant experience in managing/planning/supporting technical teams to provide services to researchers, along with experience in scaling, troubleshooting, and developing practical classes. Along with experience in implementing practices/procedures to improve compliance (e.g., WHS) and operational efficiencies 

  • experience in either of the following: working with high voltage equipment, use of high-pressure vessels or operation of lasers. A willingness to undertake required training/courses, if required 

  • ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders. Ability to maintain strong working relationships and to work collaboratively with other staff to support required organisational outcomes. Well-developed interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with matters 

  • demonstrated experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff; and experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues 

  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work. Along with the demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and limited supervision 

  • relevant experience the safe handling/storage/disposal of dangerous waste (e.g., sharps) and hazardous substances (e.g., chemical waste, radiation, compressed gases and cryogens). A willingness to undertake relevant hazardous substance training/courses, if required 

  • experience of optimising protocols and an ability apply and contribute to the development, maintenance, and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures
