The Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering has an opportunity for a Research Associate. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with a multidisciplinary team (UNSW Sydney, Griffith University, and Northwestern University, USA) and provide support across several ongoing projects in various areas of research. If successful you will drive a research project funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in the Phan group, experimentally support other students and researchers in the group, help define and drive new research directions aligned with the overall goals of the group.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities by supporting the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets. You will also have the opportunity to participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of students, and have active engagement with fellow researchers both at UNSW and other institutions.

This role reports to the Project Leader (Dr. Hoang-Phuong Phan) and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level A – $106,337 to $113,737 per annum + 17% superannuation

Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electronical/Electronic Engineering, Material Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in micro/nanolithography, material synthesis using cleanroom facilities and electrochemical workstation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in sensing device development and characterization. Strong experience in flexible, stretchable electronics is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in characterization of biological sensing devices using in vitro or in vivo approaches.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
