About the opportunity

The University of Sydney welcomes applications for a Professor Media Communications (Education Focused) in the School of Art, Communication and English, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions. The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for and demonstrated excellence in educational practice and innovation and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney.

The Professor in Media and Communications/Digital Cultures (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, they will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.

This position is geared towards scholars deeply engaged with teaching and learning of digital media within higher education settings. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven history of innovation in education, which should encompass holding an Advance HE fellowship and/or a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. Additionally, candidates should have a robust portfolio of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) publications that enhance their contributions to the digital media domain. As part of a team of experts in digital media, the candidate is expected to pursue a career focused on education, with a keen interest in advancing educational leadership.

About you

The digital media program stands out for its critical perspectives on media and communication studies within the Media and Communications Discipline. The new team member will align with a cadre of globally-recognised digital media educators, contributing to the curriculum's design, development, and delivery at both the undergraduate and postgraduate tiers.

Desired criteria include:

  • A Ph.D. in digital media or a closely related field

  • A solid history of curriculum coordination and development

  • Proficiency in critical digital media analysis, encompassing areas like media industries, digital cultures, and platform studies

  • Deep knowledge of media industries and current production techniques

  • A strong dedication to teaching excellence

  • Publications in pertinent academic journals

  • Established contributions to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) in Media and Communications or Digital Cultures

  • A history of acquiring external funding for projects aimed at educational innovation and its assessment

  • Proven experience in leading educational innovation teams within Media and Communications

Term and remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing position. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
