About the Opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for projects focused on quantum simulation and sensing using large crystals of trapped ions.
The Quantum Control Laboratory at the University of Sydney is focused on studies of quantum control, metrology, and quantum simulation using trapped ions. The lab is a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), a collaboration of five major Australian universities focused on fundamental and applied research in quantum physics and engineering. Furthermore, the University is part of the newly founded Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA). Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with external partners supported by major international projects. Details of recent publications and ongoing research projects are available here: https://www.sydney.edu.au/science/our-research/research-areas/physics/qu...
This project focuses on leveraging our ability to trap and control large ion crystals in order to facilitate new studies of strongly correlated quantum materials and ultra-sensitive electric field detection for tests of fundamental physics.
Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute broadly to the group and:
- study of exotic phenomena in quantum magnetism and quantum many-body physics
- develop new modes of operation and measurement in order to employ quantum technology for tests of fundamental physics
- explore new techniques in the control and measurement of strongly interacting multidimensional quantum systems, leveraging insights from the fields of quantum physics and atomic physics.
- build and test novel laser systems to expand the functionality of 2D and 3D trapped-ion systems, including the development of novel approaches to laser cooling and the engineering of multibody interactions.
Primary responsibilities for the candidate will include conducting experimental measurements, developing new hardware for system enhancement, exploring new applications of trapped ions, mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory projects and students.
