About the team
The safety, health, and wellbeing of our staff, students and partners is fundamental to UWA’s pursuit of excellence in education and research. The Safety Directorate is responsible for all aspects of health and safety for staff, students and other users of the University’s campuses and properties in the context of the Western Australia Work Health and Safety Act 2020. This unit leads the University’s strategic intent to achieve and effectively maintain a safe and healthy working environment for all, and culture that considers safety and health risk as part of all operational planning and delivery activities.

About the opportunity
Reporting to the Director (Safety), you will lead a team of five WHS Specialists in the development, implementation, maintenance, and auditing of UWA’s Safety Management Systems in the disciplines of Engineering, Physics, Chemical Management, Radiation and Laser Safety, Diving and Boating, and Fire and Emergency Management to foster best practice and ongoing continuous improvement.

You will work closely with University Heads of School, Heads of Research Groups and Business
Unit Directors and their management lines to advise, guide, coach, and audit local area
operational safety risks. You will provide leadership and direction to complex safety matters
and work with your direct reports and WHS Advisors team to lead in the provision of appropriate advice and support.

About you
To qualify for this role, you should possess a relevant tertiary qualification in occupational safety and health, science, health, engineering, or a related field, or demonstrate equivalent competency. Your experience, particularly in leading and managing teams and projects, is crucial. Your expertise in specialist safety, quick navigation of complex safety issues, and collaborative leadership under a 'Partner' based model are essential for providing best practice advice and support to key stakeholders. Your background should include managing safety risks in complex facilities across various work locations and disciplines, along with a demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety principles and legislation specific to Engineering, Physics, Chemical Management, Radiation and Laser Safety, Diving and Boating, Fire and Emergency Management within a university setting. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary for leading and coaching stakeholders in a collaborative, consultative, and outcomes-focused manner. Your planning and organisational skills, along with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, are critical for success. Demonstrated leadership in embedding a proactive and integrated safety culture across a large and complex organisation is expected. A tertiary qualification in occupational safety and health, science, health, engineering or similar; or demonstrated equivalent competency is required. Desirable qualifications include a Certificate IV Training and Assessment, WHS Lead Auditor Qualification, and an industry-recognised qualification in incident investigation (e.g., ICAM or Tap Root).

Note: Provision of a Current “C” class driver’s licence.
