About the Role
The Manager, International Safeguards and Research Security, in the University’s Office of Research Ethics and Integrity, leads a team overseeing compliance and assurance processes that safeguard research activities and support the University’s robust research security culture. They develop and implement frameworks to support adherence to various international, defence, and national security regulations, facilitating assurance activities including the University's Foreign Interest Disclosure program. This role involves diverse daily activities including efficient management of processes, expert advice, proactive monitoring of the regulatory and operating environment, risk analysis and outreach activities to support the University’s robust research security culture.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing and leading the International Safeguards function to ensure delivery of high quality advice and effective processes;
- Establishing credibility and influence with stakeholders, and proactively undertakeing education and outreach activities to support a robust research security culture;
- Operating proactively to identify trends, risks and recommendations to continuously improve the University’s international safeguards and research security culture.
Who we are looking for
You will possess strong understanding of research security matters, communication skills to convey complex information effectively, critical thinking abilities to articulate risks and opportunities clearly, and demonstrate a service-oriented approach with attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement. Additionally, you should thrive in a dynamic environment, adept at managing competing and changing priorities, and have a good understanding of the research context.
You will also have:
- Post-graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent mix of education and relevant experience;
- Subject matter expertise in Export Controls, National Security or relevant related areas;
- Experience in leading a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team of subject-matter experts.

This role is located in the Office of Research Ethics & Integrity (OREI), a business area within Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC). OREI provides expert advice, guidance and training to facilitate the ethical and responsible conduct of research. We partner with academic divisions and Chancellery to support seven key areas of governance and oversight: research integrity, human research ethics, animal ethics, gene technology, bio-risk management, animal welfare and export controls.
Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) is the central facilitator of research funding in the University, taking advantage of the full diversity of research funding opportunities.
