The School of Architecture and Civil Engineering are seeking a Lecturer at Level B or Level C to join their staff to deliver high quality teaching and research activity to the school and wider University.

About you

This academic position is for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer with teaching experience in architecture with a highly developed design capacity and developing leadership.  The appointee will be required to contribute to core teaching, research, and engagement duties across the architecture disciplines including landscape architecture. We are looking for a person to join the team who is creative and ambitious in architectural disciplines and their evolution as disciplines and professions. A strong background in applying technology within the field, in at the architectural, urban and/or landscape scale(s) and the use and manipulation of data, representation and modelling techniques would be valuable.

We are interested in people with both a theoretical and practical approach and with deep experience as a design practitioner, studio teacher, scholar, and researcher with a strong vision for the future of the practice. We invite applicants who can demonstrate experience and strength in design, technology and studio teaching as well as the capacity to develop and deliver curriculum in their area of specialisation. The successful applicant will be required to develop nationally recognised research in areas of current architectural and/or landscape architectural concern, including practice-based research. The applicant should have the ability to attract high-quality postgraduate research students.

The applicant must demonstrate a designerly approach to teaching and have a strong portfolio of coursework linking to issues of national and international concern in the medium and practice of landscape architecture and urban design. Leadership in teaching is essential with the ability to develop and design critical, creative, and immersive studio-based courses in collaboration with industry. Strong practical and theoretical connections and links to practice are essential to spearhead the capstone projects and to assist students to transition to professional practice. The applicant is expected to link teaching and research efforts within the discipline and will be required to deliver undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the field of architectural and landscape design, and participate in, and contribute to, the design culture broadly within the School and the University. This includes the ability to make connections across and between core areas of disciplinary knowledge and design across a range of scales.

The applicant may be required to teach and conduct core classes including design studios, dissertation, research, environments, communication and technical and construction subjects and lead and collaborate in the academic and administrative, consultative and coordination tasks involved with these courses. Functions associated with the position include presentation of lectures, tutorials and studios, assessment of students and course administration in line with the University’s quality assurance requirements.

The successful applicant must be able to articulate a clear research enquiry integral to the discipline. We are looking for a particular capacity to integrate design approaches to emerging research methods. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, design practice research and professional capabilities relevant to the discipline and course areas taught. They will also be expected to actively promote the Program(s) by establishing and maintaining memberships, links, and partnerships with academic, industry and professional communities. The applicant should have a demonstrated commitment to Connection to Country, and ‘Climate Positive Design’. Evidence of strong collaboration across disciplines is necessary as is the ability to foster relationships and lead projects within the school of Architecture and Civil Engineering. They will also be required to undertake research activities in line with the University’s research strategy and policies.

To be successful you will need:

1. A PhD in an architectural discipline or a related area of research.

2. Demonstrated experience in innovative and effective tertiary teaching of design studio and other courses, coordination, supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, including the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials.

3. A developing research track record with evidence such as recent, sustained quality research outputs, supervision of Higher Degree by Research students, research income and publication outputs.

4. Demonstrated design strengths with innovative design practice projects across a range of scales and digital design skills.

5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with and to negotiate sensitively with students especially on issues related to effective learning.

6. Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to work confidently and effectively with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.

7. Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, and ability to contribute to the diversity of the School community.
