Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Indigenous Health Education

Seeking a suitably qualified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander academic with a strong teaching, and clinical or research record, in Medical/Health Education.

THE ROLE

• Salary Package: Lecturer (Level B), from the pro rata equivalent of $115,787 to $136,995 p.a. or Senior Lecturer (Level C) from the pro rata equivalent of $141,376 to $162,584 p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading

• Appointment Type: Part-time (21 – 28 hours per week), 3 years fixed-term

• Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role

The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander academic or health worker, to lead the continuing development, refinement, coordination and delivery of aspects of teaching and learning related to the history, culture, traditional/contemporary knowledges and health of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Faculty's courses in medicine and health - especially the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Physiotherapy and Master of Public Health. The focus will be to broaden existing work underpinned by the key themes of the Faculty’s Indigenous Health Curriculum, to strengthen Indigenous education. Themes include:

• Learning of Indigenous cultural awareness, respect, and cultural responsiveness in interactions with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,

• Understanding key aspects of history and culture and their connection to current health problems affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,

• Strength-based knowledge and communication as important counters to problem-based perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and peoples,

• Aboriginal perspectives on health and healing, what can be learnt from Aboriginal approaches

• Partnership and engagement approaches that focus on mutually beneficial partnerships which support community-led change & co-design.

This work will include the development of connections and partnerships for community engagement and Indigenous clinical experiences for students in our medical and health courses.

The role would also support alignment of existing learning and teaching with, and implementation of, Mudang Dali - the University’s Indigenous Connected Curriculum Framework. Opportunities for completing higher degree research studies whilst working in the role will be considered.

About You

You will be a highly motivated academic or health worker with a passion for education in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture, history traditional/contemporary knowledges and health. You could be an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Aboriginal Health Practitioner, or other clinicians in the field. You may have or are interested in gaining experience in developing, teaching and leading aspects of curricula within a higher education setting and have demonstrated success using technologies associated with blended learning to ensure that the Faculty’s educational programs successfully incorporate an Indigenous curriculum in an innovative way. You will be able to bring to the role your established personal and professional connections and networks to provide authentic interactions, and to enhance the clinical education experience, for our students.

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

• Postgraduate qualifications or an interest in gaining qualifications as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, or in a health-related field such as medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, or other allied health profession, public health, or a related area.

• Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning with evidence of a focus on ensuring a high-quality student experience utilising Indigenous knowledges, experiences, pedagogies and perspectives: particularly the Aboriginal/ Torres Strait Islander experience of the health system.

• Demonstrated experience to effectively teach, including an ability to develop and lead scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning;

• Experience undertaking community engagement activities, particularly in Indigenous health networks.

• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to relate to staff and students from all backgrounds and to represent the faculty to external stakeholders and the general public.

• Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of a culture of excellence and scholarship in health and medical education.

• Demonstrated understanding of the principles of confidentiality, anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and safety as well as other relevant legislation. The ability to implement equal employment opportunity and occupational health and safety plans, policies and programs.

Additional criteria for level C applicants:

• Tertiary level qualifications in Education

• Experience or qualifications in public health, health policy, or Indigenous health research

• Demonstrated evidence of research activity in the field of medical or health-related education relative to opportunity.

• Demonstrated capacity to supervise higher degree research students.

• Ability to develop and lead scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

• PhD in a relevant discipline or fellowship of a relevant specialist college or equivalent.
