The School of Social Sciences has a strong research culture which spans various disciplinary areas including politics and international relations; geography; criminology and gender studies; sociology; Asian studies and languages; environment and population; and anthropology and development studies.  The School also includes the Stretton Institute of Public Policy; and a new centre for housing research; and a Confucius Institute.

Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Head of School is a member of the Faculty Executive therefore contributes to the overall leadership and management of the Faculty, working in close collaboration with Deputy Deans, other Heads, Directors and the Faculty Executive Director.  The Head is responsible for improving research excellence, focus and scale; ensuring continuous improvement of the student learning experience and enhancing effective stakeholder engagement for the School.
