(Level B) $107,276 to $126,894 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

There is one fixed-term position available of up to two (2) years duration, subject to project end-date. Flexible work arrangements can be negotiated with the right candidate.

Be part of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning – the largest computer vision and machine learning research group in Australia – and contribute to world-leading research projects at the Centre for Augmented Reasoning.

The postdoctoral researcher for ‘Interactive machine learning and machine learning-driven science’ will be supervised by Professor Dino Sejdinovic. This research topic will be explored in collaboration with CSIRO’s Data61, including its Imaging and Computer Vision Group.

This project will investigate machine learning (ML) driven science discovery, how scientific and expert knowledge can be embedded with data-driven machine learning, and how ML can supercharge scientific discovery. There will be opportunities to develop novel ML methodologies grounded in domain-specific scientific understanding as well as to interact with and translate core research to business units of the CSIRO, such as astronomy, ecology, agriculture and food, robotics, and/or manufacturing.

The tasks of the researcher will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to the University and CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research to be applied in a range of domains such as environmental science and manufacturing
  • Working collaboratively with University and CSIRO colleagues on internal and external projects with associated deliveries.

Outputs will include novel methodologies for incorporating domain knowledge into hybrid machine learning models, including but not limited to:

  • Physics-informed models
  • Graphical causal models
  • Data across modalities.

This exciting role will contribute to the Centre for Augmented Reasoning’s objective to build world-class research capability in machine learning while demonstrating the potential and impact of this knowledge for industries in Australia.

To be successful you will need:

1.   A PhD in computer science, statistics or mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience

2.   Programming experience and expertise in Python and one or more relevant deep learning libraries and ML platforms such as PyTorch, Tensorflow

3.   Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: machine learning or deep learning, computer vision, optimization, scientific computing, computer science, probability and statistics.

4.   Track record of publications in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals (e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, CVPR, ICCV, AISTATS, UAI, JMLR), commensurate with experience and opportunity

5.   Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience

6.   A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners

7.   Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable characteristics:

  • Has the experience and/or ability to contribute to the promotion of research capabilities to industry and the wider community.
  • Enjoy an outstanding career environment
