About the Role 

Based in the UniSA Mount Gambier campus , the Senior Research Fellow: Forestry Systems will work within the Forestry Centre of Excellence, leading and collaborating on internal and external projects developing applied forestry systems for use in the forest industry, and in particular those systems that simulate forest plantation growth, yield and other ecosystem processes, including the components that help capture and transform the data needed to perform these functions. The primary focus region will be the Green Triangle region of South Australia and South Western Victoria, which is the premier plantation forestry and processing region in Australia.

The Forestry Centre of Excellence (FCoE) is a research centre established in December 2023, funded by the South Australian government and located at the UniSA campus at Mount Gambier, South Australia. It builds on the successful research portfolio ($8m in currently contracted projects) already established through the UniSA Forest Research Mount Gambier initiative that commenced in 2018 and is now being absorbed into the FCoE. The SA Government will fund the FCoE with A$15M over ten years, and the University of South Australia and the Green Triangle Forest industries Hub are providing further funding as co-investment. Research income obtained through the National Institute for Forest Products Innovation (NIFPI) and other forestry funding streams will also be managed through the FCoE. The Centre aims to be acknowledged as an international leader in forest industries for research, education, product, and market development. It will have a significant focus on industry collaboration to elevate research outcomes with clear translation into business and supporting additional workforce capability and investment in new innovations across forest industries.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Consult with industry partners to determine and document forest data, modelling and systems priorities and development and funding pathways to completion
  • Engage effectively with industry and/or end users, including attracting industry funding for research projects and delivering associated milestones for industry-engaged projects
  • Under limited supervision, develop and apply models in batch scenarios to plantation forestry, agroforestry and agriculture
  • Identify desirable improvements in software and contribute improvements using a standard issues process
  • Provide software/modelling support for projects solving real-world problems

Essential Skills and Experience 
  • A PhD qualification in forest science, agricultural science, agroforestry, or farming systems modelling
  • Demonstrated understanding of the drivers of productivity and profitability in forestry and agricultural systems
  • Demonstrated understanding and industry use of forest growth and yield modelling systems and software, and understanding of the data (including remote sensing) and model requirements supporting forestry systems
  • Demonstrated understanding of forest valuation standards and trends, and of the commercial in confidence requirements of the system inputs and outputs
  • A record of supervising HDR students, including evidence of successful completions
