CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pathogen Surveillance Technologies

Updated: about 5 hours ago

  • 3-year postdoctoral role for an early career researcher with a PhD in plant molecular biology, plant-microbe interactions, or synthetic biology.
  • Contribute to research to support the grain industry within Australia and the world.
  • Collaborate with world leading teams across CSIRO, Government and Industry.

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The focus in this role will be to identify virulence genes in cereal rust fungi that allow them to overcome resistance traits bred into crop cultivars. This knowledge will be utilised to develop tools and techniques to enable rapid molecular diagnostic technologies for rust fungi to monitor pathogen populations in the field and forecast disease outbreaks.

The CERC Fellow will work across two high-performing groups within CSIRO’s Agriculture & Food unit; Pests & Diseases and Synthetic Traits.  The CERC Fellow will directly join the Pests and Diseases team which is globally recognised for delivering impact and advancing knowledge on rust disease resistance with the overall goal to prevent crop losses.  The CERC Fellow will also collaborate and engage with colleagues in the recently launched CSIRO Catalysing Australia’s Biosecurity Initiative.
