This role is sits within a specialised pay-confidence program team within the Operations Division at UNSW. 

Why your Role Matters
As Claims Manager, you’ll lead a small team focusing on UNSW’s commitment to identifying and resolving employee pay claims by overseeing the implementation and efficient operations of a centralised claims management process across the University.  

This is a newly created role that will oversee the efficient identification, assessment and resolution of claims queries, offering high-level analysis and reporting to key stakeholders as required. Building a professional network across the University, you’ll work closely with program members as well as leadership in Faculties and Divisions to resolve claims and ensure an ongoing culture of compliance.    

This role requires a strategic and analytical mind, with previous experience in leading employee relations advisory services across pay claims to oversee the successful investigation and resolution of claims received from start to finish. The role reports into the Stream Lead will have at least one direct report. 

Accountabilities: 

  • Lead and drive the claims management process from start to finish, ensuring alignment with program and compliance strategies.  
  • Manage Claim/Compliance Officers; ensuring a high level of service is provided, 
  • Provide strategic and operational advice to claimants and program leadership on claims management.  
  • As a priority, evaluate UNSW’s pay claim management process; redesign and implement a new efficient process. 
  • Lead investigations on a range of wide range of complex pay claims across UNSW’s obligations under its enterprise agreements, the Fair Work Act and other applicable regulatory instruments.  
  • Provide recommendations on next steps in relation to substantiated claims and unsubstantiated claims, negotiating outcome with claimants. 
  • Develop a suite of reports and documentation for senior stakeholders to ensure pay claims are efficiently reported, highlighting trends or broader compliance issues identified.

Who you are summary:
You will hold a relevant qualification, or equivalent level of knowledge, and extensive experience in human resource management, industrial relations or employment law, including oversight of pay claim investigations, alongside the following skills & experience: 

  • Strong knowledge and capacity to interpret and provide practical guidance on legislation, industrial agreements and policies, as well as experience in wages and employee record keeping compliance. 
  • Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills with the confidence to engage senior stakeholders. 
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to be proactive in the development of robust solutions to problems.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail.  
  • Ability to apply judgement, creativity, and flexibility to generate new and innovative ideas and approaches and to solve complex problems. 
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives. 
  • High level of experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities and meet competing deadlines, using judgement and initiative. 
  • Proven knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures, leading a team.
