About the opportunity 

The Faculty of Medicine and Health i s the largest faculty in the University of Sydney, and contains seven academic schools, including Sydney Pharmacy School (SPS).

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as Chair of Pharmacological Science. This is a research focused position suited to an ambitious person with a passion for building a program of work in pharmacological science. The Chair will grow an internationally outstanding research program which will complement and leverage the research activities in the School and Faculty. Within the SPS, the position will be eligible for appointment as Deputy Head of School and will be empowered to lead the laboratory-based research of the School. The Chair will be expected to leverage the programs beyond the SPS, such as laboratory research in the School of Medical Science and build strong connections with Faculty Research Flagship Research Centres – such as the NH&MRC Clinical Trials Centre. The Chair’s research program should align very closely with the aspirations of the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator. The Accelerator is a $650M partnership between the University and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital/Sydney Local Health District which is committed to accelerating the pathway of research discovery to clinical practice.

We are looking for a generous scientific leader who is capable of fostering connections with a wide network of academic, industry and professional institutions, partners, and stakeholders. The Chair must have a disciplined approach to research, recognising the challenges of delivering against commercial milestones whilst managing the career aspirations of students and academic staff.

The Chair will report to the Head of School and Dean of Pharmacy, currently Professor Andrew McLachlan.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will have:

  • a PhD in a relevant discipline
  • an international reputation as an authority in their discipline or area of expertise, with a supporting research profile including competitive research grants, publications and evidence of recognition within the broader research community
  • strong research track record in the pharmacological sciences, including but not limited to experimental and molecular pharmacology, drug discovery, structure-function relationships and translational biology.
  • experience in translation and commercialisation, which may include bringing compounds through the drug development pipeline or developing and pre-clinical evaluation of biomarkers
  • a proven track record in scaling research from single-investigator projects to consortia-driven programs
  • demonstrated ability to foster interdisciplinary research which delivers outcomes against milestones
  • experience in people leadership and management within the higher education/knowledge worker sector or industry
  • a strong track record in supervision and mentorship of higher degree students and early career researchers
  • a wide network of established relationships with academic, industry and professional institutions.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding agreement. The appointment is also subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will also be provided if required.

The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
