About the opportunity

The University of Sydney Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery seeks a highly talented Education Focused academic with expertise in one of the following:

  • Practice Learning
  • Paediatric and/or Child & Adolescent Health Nursing

The Associate Professor/Professor of Nursing (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, you will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.

The “Education Focused” category is designed for educators known for their exceptional skills in teaching and curriculum design. Professors/Associate Professors within this category are recognised both internationally and within the university for their expertise in educational delivery.

Post holders will have a strategic role in assessing teaching, learning and engagement strategies with the Sydney Nursing School academic team and our partners. This role will have a track record in advancing education research in their specialist area and will take a lead in advancing pedagogical design, delivery and research in the School and Faculty. They will join a highly skilled, dynamic diverse team of academic and professional colleagues who are committed to provide the highest quality education and student experience. Key responsibilities include leading curriculum development and innovative education initiatives to elevate the university's educational stature, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, and enhancing teaching quality.

This role plays a pivotal role in shaping the university's leadership and strategic goals, enhancing the academic community by promoting a culture of excellence, and guiding both staff and students.

This role is deeply involved in driving pedagogical advancements, actively involved in teaching, engaging in scholarly discussions, and influencing educational policies.

The Professor/Associate Professor of Nursing (Education Focused) involves maintaining a leading position in educational design and delivery, focusing on improving student learning outcomes and spearheading educational innovations. The individual is responsible for producing significant research (including education-related research), securing project funding, and representing the university at international forums.

The position significantly contributes to university governance, mentoring academic success, and fostering a positive workplace culture that values diversity and collaboration. Additionally, the role includes advancing the university's strategic objectives, engaging with external communities, and leading partnerships that promote educational excellence and policy development on national and international levels.

The Professor/Associate Professor of Nursing (Education Focused) will be recognised internationally as a leading expert in educational design and delivery, with a notable track record for enhancing student outcomes, pioneering educational innovations, and contributing to respected research in the field. They will have been acknowledged for their education excellence through various awards and their ability to secure external funding for research. With substantial leadership and management experience in higher education, the Professor of Nursing/Associate Professor (Education Focused) will excel in supervising and mentoring colleagues towards success. Their proven expertise extends from curriculum development to conducting prominent research and fostering an environment conducive to student success.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate must have:

  • PhD in Nursing or relevant health-related area
  • Registered nurse or midwife or eligibility to be registered within Australia
  • Fellow or Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (or equivalent recognition)
  • Significant experience in people leadership and management within the higher education sector, including demonstrated excellence in supervising and/or mentoring others to success
  • A significant track record in education research, education scholarship and demonstrable evidence of impact on education theory and practice
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis and will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
