About the opportunity

The University of Sydney welcomes applications for Associate Professor/Professor (Education Focused) in the School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions. The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney.

The position is based in the School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The School of Medical Sciences is one of the most research-intensive schools in the University. The School delivers teaching into a variety of programs, including Science, Medical Science, and several professional degrees like the Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Diagnostic Radiography and Engineering. In 2021 the school underwent a major reform to reorganise teaching and research into a more contemporary model. The mission of the school is to create leaders in medical science education and research.

The Associate Professor/Professor (Education Focused) will lead efforts to enhance student learning through innovative educational practices. This role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating educational initiatives, coordinating high-quality teaching, and spearheading projects to explore pedagogical advancements, curriculum development, use of AI in assessment and learning, and program design within the School/Faculty. The ideal candidate will pioneer innovative teaching methods, develop and assess program materials, and contribute to the global advancement of teaching methodologies. Responsibilities also include significant research in education, securing project funding, and representing the university at international forums. Facilitating AI integration into the curriculum and enhancing assessment methodologies are key aspects of this role.

The position may require some travelling to Westmead and Dubbo campus for teaching purposes. The position reports to The Head of School, Professor Mary Collins.  Associate Professor/Professor of Medical Sciences (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, they will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.

About you (Skills, capabilities and experience)

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Hold a PhD in Medical Science or Education (specialising in Medical Science)

  • An outstanding track record of publication in top-tier, peer-reviewed international science education and/or Medical Science education

  • A proven record for obtaining funding for scholarly activities and research in education

  • International reputation as an authority in educational design and delivery, including recognition for achieving improved or consistently excellent student outcomes, educational innovation, educational leadership and/or well-regarded pedagogical or disciplinary research

  • A broad network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions

  • A distinguished record of educational excellence, evidenced by contributions to student learning, recognition and innovative practices

  • Significant experience in leadership and management within higher education, including excellence in supervision and/or mentoring

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
