About the opportunity

Formed in 1856, Sydney Medical School is the oldest medical school in Australia. it accommodates around 1200 medical students undertaking a four-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine program, in addition to postgraduate coursework students undertaking a wide range of master’s degree, graduate diploma and graduate certificate courses.  In addition to teaching and research facilities on the primary Camperdown and Westmead campuses, Sydney Medical School is comprised of six metropolitan clinical schools and three rural clinical schools where students undertake the majority of the program.

Sydney Medical School’s Clinical School has access to the full clinical, teaching and research staff resources of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) at Camperdown. The school promotes interdisciplinary teaching and learning and has teachers and researchers in both University, Local Health District and Private practice roles. The school’s affiliates are deeply involved in all aspects of the school’s activities and relate through the CCS administration and Head of Clinical School. 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide leadership in the development, implementation and promotion of clinical/education programs for MD students at Central Clinical School and at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

  • act as the Student Support lead, to facilitate guidance to medical students to undertake their degree, including those who need additional academic review and support

  • collaborate with Sydney Primary Health Network, the Sydney Clinical School of General Practice and across other divisions and departments to develop annual and long-term plans for improving health care quality, safety, process improvement and value

  • oversee strategic planning and financial management including budgets, operations improvement, and health system development and management

  • provide clinical care as part of the health care team, in relevant areas of medicine including in actively contributing to all department activities, e.g. quality and safety and service improvement

  • promote a culture that is collaborative, team oriented, and one that respects the skill sets and opinions of all faculty and staff.

About you

  • have a PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field of medicine

  • are registered with APHRA as a medical practitioner

  • have a current clinical appointment in Sydney LHD, preferably at Royal prince Alfred Hospital

  • have experience in teaching and learning, including demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives

  • demonstrate the pursuit of academic research of national and international significance (eg in education research or a specific discipline) with a developed network of relationships with academic, consumer / advocacy, industry and / or professional organisations, partners and stakeholders.

  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the key issues in the discipline and higher education sector.

In additional to the above, a Level D Associate Professor (teaching focus) would require:

  • have an established or emerging national profile and track record in research pr education in the relevant discipline.
