  • Part time (3.5 days per week), 0.7FTE fixed term position until 31st December 2024, with possibility of extension subject to funding. Located at the Faculty of Science on the Camperdown Campus

  • Base Salary Level A, $83,454 - $112,462 p.a. (pro rata) + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The School of Chemistry are welcoming applications for an Associate Lecturer in Chemistry Education to contribute to the teaching and learning efforts within the school/faculty while working with the support and guidance of more senior academic staff to develop their research profile and education proficiency.

Working closely with Dr. Stephen George-Williams , the successful incumbent will backfill Stephen’s research responsibilities (0.3FTE) alongside covering a small amount of teaching (0.2FTE). Outside of this, the successful incumbent will support a faculty/university wide investigation into the cause of FA (failure) science student outcomes (0.2FTE). Through this role, you will contribute to the chemistry educational literature, gain experience in lecturing and/or tutoring and, finally, undertake large-scale, and mixed-methods, data analysis.

With regards to the teaching expectations, training will be provided by the School of Chemistry staff, including recipients of local and national teaching awards. Further support will be provided throughout the year by academic staff involved in the teaching program. Additionally, you will attend training modules run by the Education Innovation group in the University (topics include team teaching, creating positive environments, and peer-peer learning).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • support the faculty/university investigation through data collection/analysis (both quantitative and qualitative), organising/booking meetings/catering and other general admin requirements

  • prepare publications in the chemistry/science education field as well as complete additional investigations for subsequent dissemination

  • conduct, and prepare for, first-year lectures/tutorials during semester two in all areas of first-year chemistry

  • conduct examination generation and marking

  • respond to student enquiries either in-person or online

  • undertake general administrative functions.

About you

  • a PhD or MPhil degree in the either Chemistry or Chemistry/Science Education (including related disciplines such as Pharmacy or Medicinal Chemistry)

  • experience conducting original research and/or engaging in scholarly activity in the field of Chemistry/Science Education

  • experience in qualitative analysis (namely through interviews or focus groups)

  • evidence of excellence in lecturing, demonstrating and/or tutoring chemistry to either undergraduate students or senior secondary students

  • outstanding oral and written communication skills

  • experience in quantitative analysis of student performance data. (desired)
