About the role

The Animal Technician provides technical expertise for all pre-clinical aspects of the Surgical and Orthopaedic Research Laboratory (SORL). This includes the daily provision of animal husbandry, monitoring, and animal care, and supporting the conduct of the SORL surgical program.

The Surgical and Orthopaedic Research Laboratories research interests encompass the biology and biomechanics of connective tissue healing and strategies to improve clinical outcomes using biomaterials and biotechnology in injured and diseased states. Our primary fields of interest overlap with our surgical colleagues in the disciplines of orthopaedics, spine, plastics and vascular surgery.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Interact closely with chief and principal investigators of SORL and liaise with Animal Services personnel regarding animal husbandry, pre- and post-operative monitoring/ care and any animal-related issues which may arise.
  • Assist in pre-operative and post-operative assessment of animal well-being, accurately maintain appropriate monitoring documentation, and possess a range of technical skills relevant to animalbased biomedical research, including anaesthesia protocols for large and small animals, blood collection, and necropsy procedures for a variety of species.
  • Assist in digitizing histology slides
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the NSW and Australian regulatory framework governing the use of animals for scientific research and adhere to other regulatory requirements pertinent to animal research, including those relating to OECD GLP, AQIS and control of restricted drugs.
  • Support the conduct of pre-clinical operations and monitoring of research animals in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes and the Animal Research Act.

About the successful applicant

(Selection Criteria)

  • A Degree, Associate Diploma, TAFE Certificate or equivalent in Animal Studies or Animal Technology with at least 2 years’ subsequent relevant work experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and current skill set in the preparation, induction and anaesthesia of laboratory and domestic animals for a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in the post-operative care, monitoring and recovery of large domestic and small laboratory animals and familiarity with current humane euthanasia methods for large domestic and small laboratory animals.
  • Demonstrated experience in necropsy, digital scanning and data output.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise daily workloads with a minimum of supervision.
  • A working understanding of animal ethics processes and the regulatory framework governing the use of animals for scientific purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful and adapt existing procedures to achieve productive outcomes across multiple surgical & animal holding facilities within UNSW and beyond.
  • Genuine commitment to the ethical care and welfare of animals enrolled in the laboratory research protocols.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
