The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching.  It offers world class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. The Academic Support Officer plays a key role within the School of Psychology in assisting with the implementation, evaluation, improvement and management of systems for learning, teaching, assessment programs in addition to various other systems used by academics in the school.


About the role

  • LEVEL 5 ($82k - $93k) LEVEL 6 ($96k – $103k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full time (35 hours)

The role reports to the School Manager, has no direct reports and will work closely with the Teaching Support Team, Academic Program Authorities and Course Convenors.

LEVEL 5: 

Specific responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Support academic staff with the implementation, evaluation and management of systems relating to learning, teaching, assessment programs and any other systems used by academics in the School.
  • Provide administrative support in the use of academic systems like ECLIPS (curriculum management system where academic offerings are managed), ECOS (Enterprise Course Outline System) and other systems as required.
  • Document and manage system guidelines and procedures ensuring they are relevant and up to date.
  • Provide administrative support for the recruitment of casual employees.
  • Provide administrative support in the implementation of workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a wider team on the design and development of assigned projects relating to teaching and learning.
  • Update the content of the Academic Curriculum Information System, including ensuring the online handbook, course catalogue and the website are accurate as required.
  • Manage the organisation of assessments and exams as required.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

LEVEL 6

(in addition the above) 

  • Provide innovative ideas to improve system processes for ECLIPSE, ECOS and various other systems.
  • Coordinate with relevant Systems Owners any identified improvement opportunities and ensure approriate actions are undertaken to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Apply, interpret and advise on policies, systems, manuals, rules, procedures and guidelines relevant to Teaching Support activities across the School.
  • Assist in the development of course curriculum and Academic Program Reviews, provide Technology Enabled Learning and Teaching (TELT) support, working alongside subject matter experts / specialists to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Produce, establish and curate educational technology support materials and resources including creating instructional materials, working with academics to identify and select appropriate educational technology resources for pedagogical needs and organising and maintaining these resources.
  • Respond to requests from education leaders and provide proactive advice and solution-focused action in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and support the outcomes of the School team by evaluating existing processes, procedures and protocols to identify opportunities for improvement and implement any approved changes.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent administrative or customer service experience in a tertiary organisation, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated high-level experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office. Experience using a student management system would be highly regarded.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

LEVEL 6

(in addition the above)

  • Significant relevant experience in a similar role in a tertiary organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience with audiovisual equipment and digital teaching and learning technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience providing high level and diverse teaching administration support and advice to Academic staff.
