The Faculty of Protestant Theology of Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main invites applications for the following position as a civil servant or public employee starting at the earliest possible date:

Professorship (W2 with Tenure Track) for Religious Studies with a Focus on the Relations between Judaism and Islam in Past and Present

The initial tenure track appointment as professor (civil servant or public employee) is for six years (§ 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Hessen (HHG)). Upon positive evaluation, the incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level (W3).

The future holder of the position is expected to represent the subject of Religious Studies with a focus on Jewish-Islamic relations and their cultural and social manifestations in research and teaching. Applicants should be distinguished by excellent academic publications in this field, also on an international level. Furthermore, they should be able to demonstrate a research profile that includes an expertise with regard to fundamental theoretical questions in the study of religion.

Requirements for an appointment are, apart from an academic degree in a relevant field such as Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, Ethnology or Theology, excellent academic achievements that are proven by a PhD dissertation, a postdoctoral thesis or an equivalent qualification.

The professorship involves teaching obligations (possibly also in English). In addition to a study program qualifying for the Ministry and a Master’s Degree in Protestant Theology, the Faculty of Protestant Theology offers BA/MA study programs in Religious Studies and Philosophy of Religion, teacher training courses at all levels and an extra-occupational Master’s degree in Protestant Theological Studies. It also officially cooperates with the Institute for Protestant Theology at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Readiness to teach across departmental boundaries is desirable. Candidates should have a proven record of excellence in teaching. The professorship is also involved in teacher training; experience ad concepts for teaching subject content in schools are welcome.

Readiness to engage in close cooperation within the department as well as to contribute to the interreligious and interdisciplinary research activities initiated by it or implemented on a cross-departmentel level is a requirement. Cooperation with the Buber-Rosenzweig Institute in Modern and Contemporary Jewish Intellectual and Cultural History is possible and welcome. Furthermore, participation in academic self-administration and Third Mission activities is requested. Active participation in the Goethe Graduate Academy (GRADE), the Goethe University’s structured doctoral program in the area of the Humanities and Social Sciences, is desirable. The prospective holder of the professorship should have experience in the acquisition and administering of third-party funding.
