Veterinary Technician/Nurse (Intermediate Care Ward)

Job Summary

 

Purdue Veterinary Hospital is adding talented veterinary technicians to support our Intermediate Care Ward! The Intermediate Care Ward, located in the brand new Brunner Complex, will house stable patients that still require 24-hour care and will offer the opportunity for veterinary technicians to practice their critical thinking skills, technical skills, and patient care skills. As a teaching hospital supporting 15 different veterinary specialty departments, veterinary technicians in the Intermediate Care Ward have the opportunity to utilize their knowledge caring for a variety of hospitalized patients. All veterinary technicians at Purdue have the opportunity for in-the-moment teaching with the veterinary and veterinary technology students. The brand new Brunner Purdue Veterinary Hospital Complex adds 65,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space for continuous care of our small animal hospitalized patients. Veterinary technicians in the Intermediate Care Ward will work closely with the ER/ICU team to provide around the clock care, and schedules may rotate through day/night shifts as well as weekends and holidays. Schedules will be discussed during the interview.

 

Purdue Veterinary Hospital values credentialed technicians for the skill and knowledge they bring to the hospital, students, and patients. Pay starts at $19/hour for Associate’s degree and no experience, and $21/hour for Bachelor’s degree and no experience. Candidates with previous RVT experience and/or additional certifications may be eligible for a higher starting rate. As a university employee, veterinary staff are afforded a generous benefits package  including medical/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, and retirement contributions, a signing bonus is available for new PVH Technicians in the ECC or ICU departments.

 

S3 requirements:

 

  • Associate degree or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program

 

S4 requirements:

 

  • Associate degree or Bachelor degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
  • Two years of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician

 

Required:

 

  • Candidates must be registered in Indiana within twelve (12) months
  • Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
  • Good oral/written communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in a veterinary hospital environment
  • Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally

 

Preferred:

 

  • Teaching and computer experience
  • Experience in a veterinary practice or veterinary teaching hospital
  • Experience in emergency, multispecialty veterinary hospital or veterinary teaching hospital
  • Experience in general practice

Additional Information:

 

  • Workday will consist of 8 or 10 hours, totaling 40 hours per work week
  • Shifts will rotate and will include days, nights and weekends
  • Will also participate in holiday coverage rotation and after hours on-call for evenings and weekends
  • Purdue will not sponsor employment authorization for this position
