The mission of Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. Our officers are commissioned special police, vested through the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Job Overview

The University Master Police Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, and investigation; understand access control systems, circulation and safety systems; and effects arrests, and emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings. They support the University community by providing information and assistance; and in the absence of a Police Sergeant, they serve as Watch Commander for shift.

Work Interactions

The University Master Police Officer is directly responsible to the Police Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, performing patrol functions, and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. They work independently with general supervision, as well as with other Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalency – preference for college degree
• 3 years of general work experience  - preferably more – of security-related, law enforcement or military experience and community policing [note: consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience)
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and ability to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification
• Ability pass a comprehensive background investigation
• Ability to qualify for a Campus Special Police Officer’s Commission
• Possession of a current certification in Baton/OC Spray
• Successful completion of Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent
• Possession of intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures
• Certification as a trainer, or ability to become certified as a trainer within promotional evaluation period (for internal promotions) or probationary period (for new hires), in one or more of the following: Baton/OC Spray, Police Cycling, Field Training, CPR/First Aid, or others as may be added in the future
• Proficiency with computer, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications
• Possession of tact, patience, a professional and courteous demeanor in order to effectively deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
• Possession of respect for the use of police powers
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
• Knowledge of telecommunications equipment and administrative and clerical skills preferred

Physical Demands: Very Heavy: Daily requirements to move items up to 20 pounds of weight. Frequently required to move more than 50 pounds of weight and to walk or stand with operation of controls. Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing more than 100 pounds.

Essential: The University Master Police Officer is considered Essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department – to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
