Position Summary:

Functions as shift leaders. Directs and supervises patient and family centered care to ensure quality care, responsible personnel management, and effective utilization of resources. Demonstrates exemplary communication skills with patients, families, visitors, and other members of the healthcare team. Responsible for supporting the mission, vision, and values of the University Health System.

Leads and role models customer service initiatives, interceding any patient complaints.
Assists the nurse manager in patient rounding.

Efficiency and Effectiveness

Collaborates with nurse manager in directing and supervising patient and family centered care for a specific unit and facilitates care delivery for shift
Prepares staff assignments, giving consideration to the following: staff competencies, patient acuity, budgetary matrix, expected admissions and discharges, anticipated patient procedures requiring off unit travel.
Records all staff assignments.
Reviews staffing for oncoming shift and plans for necessary interventions, including notification of nurse manager and nursing supervisor of discrepancies.
Coordinates and communicates shift huddles in conjunction with nurse manager.
Communicates report to oncoming team leader.
Coordinates tests, procedures and therapies with other departments when needed.
Coordinates with Case Management as needed to assure that patient care is appropriate and geometric length of stay is achieved, if indicated interdisciplinary consults are requested, discharge planning in place, and if expected discharge is not going to occur.
Notifies staff nurses that physicians are rounding and facilitates/participates in nurse/physician communication.
Assists with management of high patient volume by expediting discharges as appropriate.
Assures admissions, discharges, and transfers are placed in the computer promptly and discharges are removed timely.
Assures all handoffs are timely to ensure safe care of the patient

Assists Nurse Manager in Budget and Scorecard
Supports budgeted cost per unit of service.
Shares accountability with nurse manager to achieve scorecard targets.
Promotes and educates all staff on how they affect departmental budget.

Identifies waste and participates in process improvement.

Assures operational compliance, Infection Prevention, and safety standards are maintained, and assist in PI programs if indicated
Communicates and assures staff compliance with organizational standards and policies such as Joint Commission, OSHA, and Infection Prevention etc.
Maintains a clean safe environment, makes cleaning assignments as needed.
Assures code cart checks and blood glucose QA monitors are completed.
Monitors restraint utilization core measures and assures compliance with policy and documentation.

Assists nurse manager in performance improvement monitoring, if indicated.
Assists staff in proper completion of Safety Intelligence reports and relates information to Nurse Manager or appropriate personnel.
Facilitates team members to attend in-services and other educational/organizational programs.

Attends in-service, training programs, and staff meetings.
Participates in Shared Governance activities and initiatives via Unit-Based Council.

Responds appropriately to emergency situations or unplanned events
Responds appropriately during emergent patient situations.
Assists with falls prevention activities on the nursing area, responding quickly as appropriate to enhance patient safety.

Provides nursing care specific to population served needs
Recognizes age-related/cultural variations in assessment data and other patient information and reports abnormalities appropriately.

Responds to patient need for diversionary activity considering age, developmental stage, and health status every shift.

Essential Functions

The performance of key responsibilities must meet expectations as defined in the performance standards of this position description.

Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function. A team member who does not meet attendance standards outlined in the Personnel Policy, Attendance and Tardiness, is not qualified for this position.

Position Qualification:

Associates degree in Nursing - Required

BSN Preferred

6 months to 1 year related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experienc required

Years of Experience can be related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Registered Nurse in the state of Tennessee or Multi-State Compact License

ACLS

BLS
