Position Summary

Position Summary:

The Office of Cultural & Academic Transitions (OCAT) is seeking a Student Success Coordinator to enhance students’ experiences by engaging in issues related to academic transitions associated with culture, social class, geography, religion, race, gender, and ethnicity. The Student Success Coordinator will advise individual students and student groups from historically marginalized racial ethnic communities in support of their exploration, understanding, and development of cultural, academic, and intersectional identities. The position will also serve as the campus advisor to the Asian Pacific American Student Organization (APASO), the largest umbrella student organization of the diverse Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities at MSU. In their work, they will collaborate with students, University departments, faculty, and staff to coordinate programs and services to foster meaningful relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and aid in the developing of their leadership skills.

Therefore, interested candidates should have knowledge about the histories and experiences of APIDA communities to effectively work with students and the broader APIDA communities to plan and facilitate annual events including but not limited to “Cultural Vogue” and APIDA Heritage Month. Candidates should also have experience working with historically marginalized students within a higher education context, as well as knowledge of theoretical concepts in student identity development and student success. Candidates should have a background in student leadership development of college students; strong facilitation skills; ability to communicate effectively and positively, through oral and written modalities, with a wide range of constituencies (students, alumni, and administrative officials); organizational skills that include effective planning, time management, and a history of collaborative work with student and faculty/staff communities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Advises individual students and student organizations as assigned.
  • Broadly coordinates, implements, and maintains support services related to student life and engagement as a team member of OCAT’s Student Success Initiative (SSI). Also, conducts special projects and programs as requested.
  • Advises, consults, and represents unit with various constituents, committees, the community, and University groups regarding OCAT supported services/programs.
  • Prepares and presents materials that reflect student advocacy training, support, persistence, and retention. 
  • Creates and mobilizes appropriate assessments that broadly focus on student persistence, retention, support, and engagement. 
  • Actively collaborates across campus with other invested stakeholders.

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.  


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Administration or a Behavioral Science field such as Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Social Work, or Sociology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Written and verbal fluency in foreign language may be required.


Desired Qualifications
  • One to three years of full-time related and progressively more responsible or expansive professional experience working with young adults, administration, and program development.
  • Knowledge about Asian/Pacific Islander American cultures, communities, histories, and experiences from various backgrounds.
  • Organizational skills that include effective planning, time management, and multi-tasking
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively, through oral and written modalities, with a wide range of constituencies (students, alumni, and administrative officials), including facilitation skills.
  • Two years or more of full-time work experience with marginalized student communities who hold various intersecting identities and communities within higher education contexts, especially student of color communities, with a history of collaborative work with student and faculty/staff communities.
  • Knowledge of national trends associated with diversity and inclusion and have a working knowledge of current trends in higher education.
  • Experience with student leadership development of young adults.
  • Current knowledge systems and theoretical concepts in student support and student affairs.
