Job Summary

**This is a Limited Appointment position with a duration of six months**

The Nystul lab at UCSF has a Staff Research Associate opportunity. Under direct supervision and training, the Staff Research Associate will be responsible for laboratory research duties as well as some lab management duties. This position will be involved in experiments including genetic crosses, tissue dissecction, microscopy, molecular biology, and gene expression analysis; and perform other duties such as lab ordering/organization.

We are looking for a candidate excited about cell-biological approaches, is eager to learn, and comfortable with mechanistic thinking. The candidate will work with a team of scientists to help design, optimize, and perform experiments with the genetic model organism, Drosophila melanogaster .

General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position, and other duties as assigned. In addition, independent research projects are available separate from the above describe duties.

The Nystul lab is a highly collaborative space that is pushing the cutting edge of stem cell biology.

Department Description

The Anatomy Department is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching. The Department includes 15 faculty members with primary full-time appointments, 15 faculty with joint appointments, and about 150 postdoctoral fellows and students engaged in research that covers questions in cell biology, developmental biology and the neurosciences. Faculty have laboratories at both the Parnassus campus, where there is a focus of interest in cancer biology, and at the Mission Bay campus, where many of the neurobiology faculty are located. The administrative office of the Department is located at the Parnassus campus. Anatomy faculty and staff are committed to building a diverse community that is welcoming and supportive, one that will nurture education and research.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience with Drosophila genetics, immunofluorescence, microscopy, and quantitative data analysis
  • BA/BS in biological sciences or a related science and knowledge/experience with, the basic techniques/methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of basic genetic and cell biology processes such as protein trafficking, transcription, translation
  • Ability to design and perform multigenerational genetic crossing schemes
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and independently and take initiative in designing experiments and solving problems; communication and organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to multitask effectively; excellent demonstrated record of accomplishment; ability to adhere to all campus safety policies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing cell-biology experiments
