Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Neurobiology, is seeking a highly motivated Researcher III to be able to function under minimal supervision, to set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals. The individual will be expected to

  • Monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

  • Establish and maintain an organized lab environment.

  • Order lab supplies and keep inventory to ensure necessary resources are available to lab staff.

  • Handle and work with rodents (rats and mice) often daily, as they are an essential component of the research.

  • Communicate effectively with the PI and lab staff.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.

  • To collect, enter, summarize and analyze data.

  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.

  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals. Runs behavioral experiments in rats/mice, including self-administration and tests of cognition, anxiety, and depression.

  • Performs surgical procedures in rodents.

  • Maintains transgenic rodent colonies.

  • Collects biological samples from rodents.

  • Performs histology and microscopic imaging on rodent brain tissue.

  • Collects, enter, analyze, and graph data according to established lab protocols.

  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.

  • Orders lab supplies and maintains inventory; maintains lab equipment.

  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Annual Salary Range $35,570.00 - $46,300.00



    Qualifications

    • Master's degree in a related field

    • OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience

    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Prior experience working in a basic science lab is required.

    • On-the-job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with rodent handling and/or behavior, histology and microscopy, and/or coding, even if exposure is only through laboratory coursework, are preferred.

    • Prior experience with transgenic rodent colony management, management of other personnel, and/or experience with specialized software is desired.
