The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a highly motivated and responsible Researcher II to join the UAB transgenic core (TGEM) team. This individual will be responsible for two main aspects of Core:

1) Breeding, maintenance, and genotyping of our mouse/rat colony.

2) Cryopreservation of sperm from mice, and IVF rederivation from preserved sperm.

 

While many of the skills can be trained on the job, ideal qualifications include someone with the following skills/experiences: handling of mouse/rat, breeding and maintenance of mice/rat colony, IP injection of hormones into mice or rats, necropsy and tissue isolation, molecular skills at the bench, DNA extraction, PCR, and microscopy. Excellent record-keeping and organization are required.

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals. Runs assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.
  • Collects, enters and summarizes data.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Assists in the maintenance and trouble-shooting of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.
  • Performs fundamental statistical data analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.50 - $23.51

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Experience handling mouse/rat, breeding and maintenance of mice/rat colony, IP injection of hormones into mice or rats, necropsy and tissue isolation, molecular skills at the bench, DNA extraction, PCR, and microscopy.
